Republicans Lead the Way in Border Protection Efforts
The Texas House recently passed two crucial bills aimed to deliver resources to secure the southern border. These bills, both proposed by Representative Ryan Guillen (R-Rio Grande) and Representative Janie Lopez (R-San Benito), the only two Republicans state legislators who represent the Texas/Mexico border, were heavily supported by Republican leadership in an effort to bolster border protection, enhance economic development, and address criminal conduct related to human smuggling and stash houses.
House Bill 7 is a comprehensive measure designed to support the border region. It establishes the Border Protection Unit, and allocates $100 million for detention centers, courts, security, education, and economic development. The bill also creates grant programs to address border safety issues, support economic growth initiatives, and provide compensation for property damages caused by illegal foreign nationals. Through HB 7, higher education institutions will receive grants for recruitment, training in border-related professions, and research into border issues.
Meanwhile, House Bill 800 focuses on increasing penalties for criminal conduct involving the smuggling of persons and the operation of stash houses. This bill will increase the mandatory minimum sentence for human smuggling convictions to 10 years in prison and impose a minimum of five years in prison for individuals convicted of running a “stash house.” These stricter penalties have been designed to deter human smuggling and safeguard the lives of individuals subjected to unsafe and unsanitary conditions.
Both of these bills represent a significant stride taken by the Texas legislature to address the challenges posed by increased immigration and criminal activities at the Texas-Mexico border. These bills aim to strengthen border protection efforts, provide support to affected sectors and communities, and combat human smuggling.
