Order and Strength at the Texas-Mexico Border

Working Toward a More Secure Border

While Texas Legislators continue making improvements to proposed bills in a special legislative session, Governor Greg Abbott has been signing critical legislation into law to enhance our state’s border policies. The package of bills signed on June 8 will expand Texas’ unprecedented efforts to protect Texans from the record level of illegal immigration, weapons, and deadly drugs pouring into Texas from Mexico.

“The Texas Legislature has stepped up to make sure we continue to robustly respond to President Biden’s growing border crisis, including allocating $5.1 billion for border security” said Governor Abbott. The passage of these bills emphasizes the gravity of challenges faced at the southern border.

Among the noteworthy signings is Senate Bill 1403, an interstate compact for border security. Taking effect on September 1 of this year, SB 1403 enables Texas to collaborate closely with other participating states to create a comprehensive action plan and share security resources along the nation’s southern border. This resource collaboration includes the development and implementation of cutting-edge surveillance technology systems on state-owned land and the construction of physical barriers where deemed necessary.

Another bill set to take effect this September is Senate Bill 602. This legislation grants federal Border Patrol agents the authority to handle arrests, searches, and seizures at the border for offenses that qualify as felonies under Texas state law. Additionally, the bill mandates a comprehensive training program for Border Patrol agents to ensure their preparedness in carrying out these responsibilities effectively. With the enactment of SB 602, Texas aims to bolster border security efforts by equipping federal agents with the necessary tools and training to address criminal activities at the border.

Representatives Ryan Guillen and Janie Lopez are still working to pass yet another border bill during the current special session. HB 2 would increase criminal penalties for persons or organizations engaged in human smuggling and the operation of stash houses.

With the implementation of these bills, Republican leadership in Texas is demonstrating decisive action toward combating the escalating number of illegal crossings at the Southern Border. By putting these measures in place, Texas is showing a serious commitment to protecting its borders.

When questioned about the recent passage of bills, Logan Herrera, the political director of ART, commented, “The dedication and commitment demonstrated in passing legislation like Senate Bills 1403 and 602 are clear indications of the progress our state is making to preserve the sanctity of our borders and address a crucial matter which has been disregarded by the Biden Administration.”
